The number one positive reason to work for yourself is that you get to control your income. If your business is taking in more money, you get paid more or you can pay your employees more. Another reason to consider is that you get to make your own hours. If you’re the boss, you get to decide when to go in and when to stop working. When you are working for yourself, you also get to choose whom to work for. If you are a freelance writer or an accountant, for example, you can choose which jobs you take on and which you do not. If you know someone is particularly difficult to work with, and they make your life difficult, you can choose not to work for them. You also do not have to deal with annoying coworkers. You get to decide who works for you, if you have employees at all, so you get to choose with whom you surround yourself.

As much as you’d like to make your own hours, and you will be able to eventually, when you first start your business, there is going to be a lot of work to do, and you probably will not be able to take off much time at first. In fact, you might have to work extremely long hours to get the job done, so to speak. Furthermore, if you are working on a freelance basis, when you are choosing whom to work for, you do have a choice, but you also need to go where the money is. If you need the money, you may be forced to work for a particularly difficult client for sometime to be successful. You also may be put in a situation where you are totally isolated. This can be troublesome to someone who is used to being surrounded by people, so make sure you find time for socialization of some sort.
