The resume objective statement declares your career objectives which should be aligned with those of the organization to which you are applying for the job. It is the opening statement in the resume writing order, where the employer hears your voice for the first time. It is necessary that your career goals be related to the business objectives of the company which you are applying to. So writing a resume objective is something which needs to be done after a lot of thought. The essential thing is that you know what the employer wants to hear and read in the resume objective, so that he thinks favorably of you. The resume objective statement is normally placed after your name, educational qualifications and contact details. In short, it is your opening salvo in your effort to win over the employer. Read some resume objective examples which will give you an idea about how it’s written.

Tips on Writing a Resume Objective
If you are a fresher to the industry, you need to be especially careful about writing your career objective. Here are some tips on writing a resume objective which will surely get you an interview call, if backed by the right credentials.

Brevity is the Soul of Wit
First and foremost thing to be remembered when writing a resume objective is that it must be brief and to the point. Do not write an essay about your career objectives. Capture all the essential points and be as economical in words as you can.

Announce Your Strengths
The resume objective should include your strengths, interests and experience, preferably in the opening statement. Advertise your strengths in the core areas of the job profile they are looking for.

Sound Ambitious Without Being Pompous
It is okay to sound ambitious in the resume objective statement. Take care that you do not go beyond being realistic in your ambitions and sound pompous in the exercise. You should sound sincere and determined.

Focus on Your Ability as a Team Player
Avoid stating too many ‘I’s, and focus on your willingness to be a team player in the next part. Employers want people who can gel well in a team. Individual performers are always welcome but people who can motivate and work with a team are more in demand.

Avoid Bland & Vague Statements
Avoid writing bland and vague ideas in the objective. Be as specific as possible in your career goals. Let the employer know that you are focused on what you want and are not coming in as a naive amateur. People like it when you are specific and to the point. Let there be clarity in what you put as your career objective.

Chronological Resume Format

This is the most popular proper resume template used by job seekers. Achievements, accomplishments and experiences are written in reverse chronological order, with the recent employment first. The candidate’s career development and progression are quite evident and clear. This type of proper resume format appears straightforward with no room for misrepresentation of the employment history. That’s probably the reason why this resume format is also preferred by recruiters and employers. Read more about resume formats and templates.

How to Format a Chronological Resume?

•Start with your address and contact information
•Write your career objective below your contact information
•The body of a proper chronological resume format should consist of your past experiences beginning with the last job employment first
•List the names of the companies you have worked for, the period of employment, your job profile, your core responsibilities and your accomplishments
•Include your educational qualifications
Functional Resume Format

An individual’s acquired skills are focused in this type of resume format. The total work experience gained hardly matters. This kind of a resume format is appropriate for people switching career paths or entering the job market for the first time. More on how to write a resume for the first time.

How to Format a Functional Resume?
•Begin with your address and contact information
•A very small career objective should be mentioned after the contact details
•Emphasize on your skill sets, knowledge and accomplishments
•Include your educational qualifications
Combination Resume Format

The name itself suggests that this type of resume format is a combination of chronological and functional resume formats. In the combination resume format, the skills you possess are mentioned first, and then the employment history with experiences are listed. This resume format is the best one to highlight your skills, experiences and achievements.

How to Format a Combination Resume?

•Begin with your address and contact details
•Mention your career objective after the contact details
•Body of the resume template should comprise the list of employments in the reverse chronological order
•Highlight your acquired skills, learnings, accomplishments and achievements
•Furnish the details of your educational qualifications
Irrespective of the proper resume format chosen, what’s imperative is the information you provide in the resume. Your contacts details and your educational qualifications are essential in any resume format. Ensure that there are no spelling and grammatical mistakes. To make the resume look pleasant and not cluttered with loads of information, you can use bullets wherever possible. Make the resume style simple, yet elegant. Your prospective employer should find it easy to read. Know more on outline of a resume.

What is a resume really? You are basically advertising yourself and trying to sell yourself to the recruiters. The resume is like an advertisement stating the facts about yourself and the recruiters see if you have what they are looking for, based on the information given in the resume and select you if they feel that you are appropriate for the job. So while your educational qualifications might match up with those of a lot of others, it’s your resume statement which stands to set you apart from the rest! Hence, you need to have a good resume objective statement. Read on for more on resume writing.

After all, if a resume is your advertisement, the resume objective is the punchline (although it occurs at the start of the resume!). A resume objective should be short and hard hitting. It should talk about three things: your career goals, the skills you have to achieve them, and what you intend on bringing to the company. Let me focus on each of these aspects one by one.

The first part of the resume objective is your career goal. This is the first thing you need to think about. What industry would you like to work in? Do you have the necessary skills to do so? What do you want to achieve in your career? Where do you see yourself after 10 years?

The second part of your resume objective statement talks about the skills you possess and how exactly they will help you to perform well in the job. Bear in mind that the skills should be related to the job. If you’re applying for the job of an executive assistant, there is no point in mentioning how good you are at singing or drawing.

The third and last part of the resume objective statement is what you intend on giving the company. You should write in what way are you going to add value to the company and help the company grow.

Resume Objective Statement Examples

Still confused? Here are a few resume objective statement examples for jobs in different sectors. You can make a resume statement based on these sample resume objective statements.

School Teacher: Position of a teacher where I can achieve my dream of imparting my knowledge in (subject) to the children of this country.
Sales/Marketing: Position of a marketing executive where I can use my effective communication skills to help my employing company to not only achieve their set targets, but also raise the expectations bar.
Data Entry: Position of a data entry executive where my computer and organizational skills can be used to good effect.
Journalist: To use my writing skills productively by churning out the news and information which the people want to know.
Customer Service Manager: Person with good people skills and communication skills looking to join a reputed firm who will extract and add to his abilities.

So assuming that you are writing a resume for the first time, here are some tips for effective resume writing. Just imagine a resume layout sample based on the article!

Borders and Margins
This is the first thing that you need to take care of. Your resume should look neat and well structured. So when you make a resume on a computer, ensure that you keep a slight distance from the margins of the page.

In my opinion, a tabulated resume looks neat and well-compartmentalized. Hence you can prepare the initial outline of a resume with tables. Make 4 tables on the page: one big left sided table, the right side with two tables and one page-sized bottom table.

Fonts and Styles
Another thing you need to know about before starting your resume layout is how to use different font styles and where. Pick just one font and one font size and stick to it throughout your resume. Of course, there will be points which you would like to highlight, but you can use bold, underline and italics for those. Do not use capitals and larger fonts within the content as they look untidy.

Introduce Yourself
Now let’s move to the actual framing part. The first part of your resume includes your name and your contact details. Center align the name and keep the address, email id and phone number left aligned. You can keep your name in bold and the contact details in italics.

Resume Objective Statement
I’ve said so before and I’ll say it again, if the resume is your advertisement, the resume objective statement is the punchline! Hence, it has to be good and should have a strong impact. The resume objective statement talks about 3 things. Your career goals, your skills and what you intend to bring to the company which would employ you. Having said that, it has to be short, upto 3 sentences maximum, and not verbose, with long sentences. To good effect, you could start the career objective part with a nice, relevant quote by someone in the field you intend to work in.

Skills
Now let me assume that you have made two side-to-side tables on your resume. The left side table should include all the skills which you feel are relevant to the job you are applying to and which you actually possess! Some skills may also require substantiating proof. For example, if you’ve done a computer course in web designing, you ought to carry along a certificate of the same. Read on for skills to put on a resume.

On the contrary, if you’ve held a few jobs before, use the left side table for the professional experience and accomplishments.

Professional Experience
This part is relevant only if you HAVE professional experience. List out chronologically-with bullets-the jobs which you have held in the past and the achievements in the job. If you have had a long professional career, then you can keep this in the left side table. If you don’t then keep it in the right sided, lower table.

Academic Record
The table on the top-right side of the page is for your academic record. This is for your academic record, the schools which you went to and the marks which you obtained.

Extra Curriculars
And the last part of your resume is the long table at the bottom of the page. This one is for listing the extra-curricular activities, your achievements in your hobbies and other interests if any.

How to Write a Resume for a Job : Step 1
When figuring out how to prepare a resume for a job, it is imperative for one to know about the company that one is applying to. Never prepare a resume without doing research on the company. While thorough research will be required for the interview, at least basic research is vital while creating the resume.

How to Write a Resume for a Job : Step 2
Next step to knowing how to create a resume for a job is creating a good resume objective. In a resume, as per proper resume format, the objecting statement is what is written as well as viewed first. This objective is for your career, in general, not only your job in the company. With this objective, you can very easily let the organization know how ambitious you are and how high you want to reach! Check out how to write a resume objective. Also, you can refer to these sample resume objectives.

How to Write a Resume for a Job : Step 3
Depending on the job that you are applying to, and the nature of the field, you need to make sure that you draft the resume accordingly. For example, in case of a banking or law related job, the best option would be to stick to common fonts, white sheets of paper and black font color (more on resume writing tips for banking jobs). Follow a more straightforward format in this case. However, for a creative job, you can choose to experiment with the resume format, depending on the company and the reputation of the seniors in it. Go through these tips for effective resume writing.

How to Write a Resume for a Job : Step 4
Whatever you do, never ever forget a cover letter. A cover letter is a very important part of the resume. In fact, it can benefit you a lot. It acts as a buffer for the resume. Before the employer takes a look at the resume, he can gauge your abilities and capabilities from your cover letter. Keep the cover letter short and sweet. More so, make sure you add your career objective in the cover letter as well. Read more on how to make a resume.

How to Write a Resume for a Job : Step 5
Do not add any irrelevant information in the resume. That is another reason why research is important before writing the resume. For example, if the company has an office softball team, you can add the fact that you were a high school softball champion in the resume. However, if it is the kind of company that believes in all work and no play, this information will be irrelevant to them, right! Take help by reading more on how to write a resume for the first time.

How to Write a Resume for a Job : Step 6
In case of past experience, you need to give your job profile and responsibilities in the resume. However, many people make a rookie mistake of including the salary amount as well. Do not do that. In case you are asked to produce the salary slips as a part of the joining procedure, that case is different, but never reveal your previous salary before the salary negotiation is done. More help on how to make a job resume.

How to Write a Resume for a Job : Step 7
Neatness and clarity are of the essence in a resume. Always keep that in mind. Do not go about rambling in the resume. Keep things simple and to the point. You can use your amazing vocabulary to floor them during the interview, if that is what you want. Read more on some resume styles.

Resume Objective Statement
The first part of the resume is writing the resume objective statement. The resume objective statement states your professional goals in life, what you wish to achieve in life and with what qualities you have. Writing the resume objective statement is a balancing act where you need to be impressive and believable at the same time. Here’s some help with writing a resume objective.

Job Related Skills
What are the skills you think you have? Which skills do you think will come in handy if you were to land the job? List them all down. The recruiters need to know what skills you will be adding to their company and hence you need to list them all down. Confused what skills to add? Read on for a list of skills to put on a resume.

Experience and Academic Record
After all, your academic record is one of the most crucial parts of the resume. A lot of recruiters put a lot of emphasis on the academic record of the candidate as they feel their academic record is a fair measure of their intelligence. Previous work experience is also important as it shows some of your achievements at your previous job and what kind of work you’re capable of doing.

Extra-Curricular Activities
Extra curricular activities too are a very important part of resume writing as they help the recruiters define a lot of characteristics for you. For example if you’ve been the captain of a sports team, it shows to the recruiters your leadership skills and an ability to motivate people and get them to do what you want. So extra curricular activities are an important embellishment to your resume.

How to Layout a Resume

The resume layout is also a very important part of how to write a resume for a job. A resume should be neatly laid out so that it is easy to read. It should catch the eye of a recruiter. Simply listing your skills and achievements is not enough (unless of course, they’re really good!) and it is equally important to be able to make a good looking resume. A well made resume can also showcase your organizing skills and the ability to make a thing look good. So a job in advertising, which demands a fair bit of creativity might look at you positively should you put in a good looking resume. Use the bold, italic and underline functions to emphasize on certain points in the resume of which you’d like the recruiters to take a special notice of.

So this was all about how to type a good resume. People do not realize the importance of how to make a resume. A good resume which gives the necessary emphasis on all your positive points will make all the difference in landing a job interview. Which means you’ve cleared the first hurdle in your job search! So give your job application a boost with these tips on how to type a resume.

Now, let us get to know how to make a resume step by step, after knowing about the different formatting styles. Follow each of these steps religiously to prepare the resume with less stress and show the employer(s) you’re the ideal candidate for their firm(s).

Step #1: If you’ve never prepared a resume before, this is the perfect time to begin. These steps on how to write a resume for the first time will effectively place the necessary information. The very first thing an interviewer notices is your heading. It comes on top of the page no matter which formatting style you adopt. The heading contains:

Name
Address
Phone number
Email address
Inclusion of web address is only necessary if the particular job requires it. Websites will only distract the interviewer, instead of impressing them.

Step #2: After writing your personal information, you need to write your job objective. It highlights your career objective and goals, and the type of job you are seeking for. The interviewer will understand your ambitions and how well you can perform than anyone else. Here are some resume objective examples that can steer you in the right direction.

Step #3: Once the job objective is out of the way, include your educational qualifications in the resume. While recruiting, a candidate’s education is highly stressed on, not just over which school he/she attended, but also his/her achievements. Here, chronological format is used in reverse by placing the recent school first, along with the year of graduation and GPA (if it’s good). If you’ve attended college, you don’t need to add your high school credentials (add high school info only if you didn’t attend college). Always emphasize your educational qualifications according to the job you’re seeking for.

Step #4: Placing information about your previous work experience and employment is the most important part of the resume. Hence, carefully brainstorm all the information that you wish to add here. Don’t just write about the company you worked for and your role, but use this space and opportunity to list all your skills, abilities, and accomplishments.

If you’ve done any volunteer work in school or where previously employed, you can list them as well. This is a good way to shadow certain failures. Everything you place here should “scream” excitement to the employer. If you have sent the resume beforehand, make this section a tool for the company to want to talk to you face to face.

Step #5: Once the main chunk of your resume is over, you can still make it more interesting. Although it isn’t necessary to write about your hobbies or awards, it is a good way to give the employer something interesting to read about. This will show what kind of a person you are (particularly when they haven’t met you or seen your face). If they relate to the position at hand, fill in your hobbies, special skills, honors, and achievements.

Step #6: Now comes the part for adding references in your resume. If you wish to include this section in your resume, just state that you can have reference page for resume upon request. Don’t just list them directly on the resume.
